Megaptera tray by Andrea Morgante

This ’megaptera’ tray by designer Andrea Morgante of London-based shiro studio is created by pushing a single sheet of mirror polished steel though a pressing technique specifically developed by alessi for this product. Created for Italian manufacturer officina alessi, it is one of the first works by the designer. It’s name having been inspired by that of a whale whale,  the rippling of the sheet increases the surface area and volume of the platter, similar to the way in which megaptera whales do when feeding. The grooves also create friction as well as increase the structural rigidity without the need for more material.
